The improbable, the inconceivable, the most far-fetched thing happened last Sunday in the league. The Roman Goddess, Fortuna, has spun the wheel of opportunity and it has done a 180. Let me give you guys a brief history lesson in Roman mythology. Fortuna was the goddess of Luck, Fate, and Fortune. She watched over the fate of an individual as well as the state. In her left hand, Fortuna usually held a cornucopia, a symbol of all good things flowing in abundance. In the right hand, Fortuna held a ship’s rudder, which implied her power to steer the delicate, precious lives of mortals. By using both objects, she was able to either bring happiness or destruction to the person’s life. An individual at this level would live like a king. However, the wheel would eventually rotate and the person would begin to endure a miserable existence, full of pain and tragedy. Some at the bottom of the wheel hoped Fortuna would eventually spin the wheel often enough for him to be back on the top, both metaphorically and financially. Well, Sam Garcia had been at the bottom of the wheel, in terms of his play in the league. He hasn't won a tournament but that streak changed at Bay Forest. This was another close battle of gladiators fighting it out to the finish. Six gladiators were only separated by the slimmest of margins, par or bogey away from being victorious. The first gladiator to fall on his sword was Hal Gregory with a double bogey on 18. This penetrated his body armor like a warm knife going through butter. The next three gladiators seated at the round table of "Woulda, Coulda, and Shoulda" was Roland Turner, Steve Little, and Gabe Ramos. All of them bogey 18 to lose by one shot. One of the final two glads was Ernest Standley known as Sir Galahad. Sam Garcia gallantly played the part of Sir Lancelot. Sir Lord Standley was fresh off a victory at Oakhurst and felt good about his chances. The two remaining gladiators battled each other all 18 holes. Neither of them gave an inch. Then, a birdie on 16 by Sir Lancelot Garcia proved to be the difference in the match. I, King Arthur Tony Barnett, have dubbed you Sir Lancelot Garcia as the greatest warrior and golfer of all the Knights of the Round Table. May the Golf Gods continue to bless you and keep you. Congratulations on your win and remember the FIRST shall be last and the LAST will be first!
