With the Blue team winning in 2012, the White team winning in 2013 and the Red team winning last year in 2014 this would be the rubber match of the Culture Cup. With the League concluding its 2015 season, the White Team was a heavy favorite to hoist the Cup. But, as the tournament date neared several top players from the White Team were unable to participate. The first to withdraw was the League’s best , Mark Ripley. Next was Khris Colbert the B flight Player of the Year Runner Up. Just when we thought the hemorrhaging was over more players were unavailable to play include Barry Barnett, Hal Gregory, Sean Fitzpatrick and two time tournament winner Kyle Andre. This was a lot of fire power for the White Team to make up and on the first day of play it showed winning only 5.5 points on Saturday’s matchup. Three points behind the Red Team and the almost impossible task of catching the Blue Teams 5 point lead. As Sunday matches started the Red Team was also put in a bad position due to no shows. Without the required number of players they were forced to have each players points count twice. This was a double edged sword if all four players played well they would easily win the cup but, if one or two played poorly they would face losing the crown as champions. The Blue Team was set with veterans who had played in all four Cup events, The Knowles Brothers, Lonnie and David, Robert Dangerfield , Mike Fontenote, and League Director Tony Barnett. Added to this close knit group was team Captain Roland Tuner and two time tournament winner Vincent Gilmore.
The Red Team took the Samurai approach and fell on that double edge sword only gaining four points during Sunday’s individual matches. The White Team banded together and put on a great come back by winning 11 points Colbert, Allen, Sawyer, Fincher and Blevins all won their matches earning 2 points each and Sammy got 1 point which put them in second place with 16.5 points. The Veteran Blue Team refused to be denied this year like the two previous years after leading on Saturday. They kept the peddle to the meddle with a record breaking mark of 19.5 points. Robert Dangerfield led the way with 6 points max, winning each event and was named most valuable player. It was a complete team victory with all players scoring three points or more each. The Blue Team gets it, they SHOW UP and are ready to play, NO all night drinking or partying with the fellows. So congratulations Blue team on a job well done. The gauntlet has been thrown so, let’s put in the work and get ready to do it again next year!
