The 2022 season kicked off last Sunday at Pasadena Municipal Golf Course. It was abundantly clear that most of the players were
dragging. Ok, it was like joy-riding with the top down. I verified and confirmed since 2018 that only 11 players have shot under par in the season openers. Six of the 11 players
were at Glenbrook in 2018 and 2019. The league's opening days pretty much suck and we don't find our groove until May or June. It's evident when I compared stats from last year at
Pasadena. We played in May where the avg score was a blistering 77.1 compared to this year's 82.6 played in March. Same course but different months. So the league's trend
A few players slightly increased their speed but they were still chilling with the wind blowing in their faces. Last year's two-time tournament winner, Jarrod Ballou, increased his speed but he came to a sudden halt. He had five doubles in one round which are tournament killers.
Adam Orta was definitely in the driver's seat and it was his tournament at the turn. Suddenly, a lug nut popped off on 10 then another one popped off on 11. By the time he got to 13, he was driving on three tires trying to navigate a diabolical pin placement. He didn't have a chance by over-correcting eventually came to a halt on 18. He had to pull off to the side of the road and wait on AAA.
Ethan Bolthouse, Ron Falan, last year's runner-up, and the league's newest shark, Haja Rabe, were the only three players who shot under par. Ethan played solid all-around except for the putt-putt carnival hole on 13 where he took a seven with a 4 putt. He cruised to a third-place spot which cost him gas money.
Ron had a smooth and consistent ride finishing this year in the same spot as last year. He drove away with a second-place spot and a pretty good payday.
Haja Rabe, a veteran golfer who has played all over the city in various leagues and tours, was unmistakably the star of the day. His 72 was low net and low gross with a field low of 27 putts. He took his ride off of cruise control and "floored" it. He brings a lot of experience and a competitive edge to the league. We're delighted to have him join us. The league's competitiveness increases each year for what appears to be a fantastic season.
Welcome to the League, Haja. Congratulations on your win.
