CLEARS THE TOWN OUT IN OAKHURST

RODNEY GRIGGS

UP FOR GRABS

This tournament produced a level of close competition like never before seen in the league. This is exactly why The League was created 8 years ago, to give the average golfer a chance to compete like the pros. The pressure of every shot, the pressure of every putt that could have a winning or losing implication. The sweaty palms, the raised heart rate, the increased adrenaline, it's called the thrill of the fight.  And this Sunday at Oakhurst there was plenty of it.  When the smoke cleared there was only one man standing with his pistols still in an amber glow and his badge on his chest gleaming as if he got away with murder.  Six players were in this closely knit pack and one shot separated them. Gabe Ramos was the first to get hit by the Sheriff when he came stumbling out of the saloon on 16,17 and 18, with double bogeys. The next bad guy to feel the wrath was in his group, Lonnie Knowles the slick lawyer from the west side of the Mississippi. Lonnie had a 35% chance to win going into 17, but after a bogey on the very difficult par three 17, his chance dropped to 20% on the 18 tee box and again another bogey on 18. His chances were like the tumbleweed blowing in the wind, zero. Next up was Steve Sachs aka The Ice Man. The Sheriff had gotten word that Steve was hiding out in the town brothels and shot him dead with his pants down on 17 and 18, with a pair of bogeys to finish 4th place, tied with Lonnie.  The next lawbreaker on the Sheriff's list was Billy White Shoes. This guy was wanted in 4 states, indecent exposure and disturbing the peace based on the pants he was wearing. Billy White Shoes won twice his rookie season.  Last year one of them was The Masters, so he knows how to win. But just like Lonnie and Steve he also had a bogey, bogey finish on 17 and 18. The Last Villian on the Sheriff's hit list was the Biggest  Baddest Meanest of them all. The Director aka Tony Barnett aka me! The only one in the top 6 to par 17. I knocked down 3 iron with a baby cut that floated back to the middle of the green right at the stick. Giving me a 12-foot birdie putt that I missed.  Going into 18, I had a 50% chance to win the match.  My drive right down the middle of the fairway, chances went to 75%. I hit the exact same shot on 17, but with a 5 iron that came up 20 feet short right below the hole. My chances just went to 95%.  Two putts and the match is mine.  The next thing I remembered, I was hovering over my body and The Sheriff aka Rodney Griggs was putting two coins over my eyes.  Apparently, I had three-putted giving Rodney the match in a scorecard playoff.  Congratulations Rodney as you ride off into the sunset. I shall return!
