This was an opener of two very distinct front nines and back nines. Jaime Villarreal was on fire on the front nine and it looks like he was going to run away with the tournament to give him victory number 13. He set a league record with 24 putts. Actually, just about everyone was rolling the ball extremely well averaging an eye-popping 30 putts per player. He also birdied 4 of the 9 holes on the front, putting him in control over the field. His closest opponent was "Mike can't finish Fontenot" and what Villarreal does well he knows his opponents from handicaps to tendencies. Trust me Villarreal was licking his chops at the turn with Mike being the closest player to him. What Villarreal did do is overlook the HOTTEST player in the league going back to his PGA win at Blackhorse, 3rd in the Players, CO-MVP in the Culture Cup and 2nd on the Two Man Best Ball this year. George Vasquez seems to thrive in the Big Tournaments. His new nickname is "BRIGHT LIGHTS". On the back nine Bright Lights George shined the brightness with 5 birdies and a blinding 32 on the back. Giving him the first Championship in the 2018 season. Congratulation on a great come back. Oh, my bag you never went anywhere!
In the B Fight Opener just about everyone was on top of the Leader Board. The tournament went back and forth all day, the early leader was newcomer Gene Chesson. Adam Orta was on top but at the turn, it was Houston Duckwall and Jayme Gonzalez. Gonzalez had been a bridesmaid twice in the League Open back in 2015 and 2017 and yes I am letting the cat out of the bag now he would be a bridesmaid again. Jarrod Ballou got hot on the back to climb himself back in contention by knocking 10 shots off his front score but lost 4 shots on the last 3 holes to tumble to a 2-way tie for 4th place with Gene Chesson. Duckwall undoing was a snowman on 10 and double on the short par three hole 11 to finish 3rd. Juan Malave would be the last man standing on top of the leaderboard. I knew he was very nervous, he had to text me a thousand times all week about the tournament and when the tournament started he was still like a cat on a hot tin roof. I went up to him on hole nine to tell him to relax and just play, "I said you are still in position to win just keep the big numbers off your card" and that is exactly what he did on one double bogey on the very difficult 16. He was able to knock 10 shots from front to keep Jayme in that Brides dress one more time. Congratulations Juan on your first victory with the League.
